Dwarf Cichlids
Dwarf cichlids generally describe cichlid species in South America and West Africa that do not attain a size larger than about 4", however, behaviorally these fish a generally extremely territorial and aggressive. Dwarf cichlids are found in both the Old World (Africa) and the New World (South America). This is also true of cichlids generally, because they speciated as the contents separated and this and other geographic/weather conditions altered the water chemistry in many places where cichlids are found in the wild. As with all cichlids, dwarf cichlids became "specialists" in their environment and for this reason and others, they've become diverse in color variations and fin structures. However, as with all cichlids, dwarfs are extremely territorial and doting parents over a spawn of fry. The species of Dwarf Cichlids found in the aquarium hobby that are from South America are from the following genus: Apistogramma, Apistogrammoides, Biotoecus, Dicrossus, Microgeophagus, Nannacara, & Taeniacara. Most of these species available to the aquarist are in the Apistogramma genus. Here are some Apistogramma species found through TheKrib. Clicking on the links below will take you to their web site. Although it may be worth the wait, we regret if this takes a bit to load, but this is not on our server, thus it is out of our control.
The species of Dwarf Cichlids found in the aquarium hobby from West African genera include: Anomalochromis, Nanochromis, Parananochromis, Pelvicachromis, and Thysochromis.
